Giant unexplained crack appears in earth in Mexico

A giant crack which parted remote farmland in Mexico has left scientists and locals baffled.

Drone video shows the sheer size of the eight-metre deep and almost one kilometre long trench, which opened up across Hermosillo's Highway 26 last week in the country's north.

In the stunning footage, filmed by Hermosillo Desde El Cielo, vehicles can be seen stopped beside the crack that in some parts is five metres wide, while a green tractor drives away from the scene.

People below the drone appear to be discussing the phenomenon.

Geological investigators are now looking into what caused the crevice, according to El Imparcial newspaper.

There has been speculation among locals that an earthquake which hit last Sunday at the San Andreas Fault may have been the cause.

However, geologists at the University of Sonora say a collapse of land on an underground stream is more likely to be responsible.

Farm workers have been forced to avoid the main highway connecting Hermosillo and the Mexican coast due to unstable ground.

Another crevice was reported to have opened up in the same area.

The event comes just one month after a second mysterious black hole was found in Siberia, one week after a similar deep crater was found in the region.

Locals discovered the second hole, which is smaller than the first, 88km from the village of Antipayuta.

Scientists who visited the original hole put the phenomenon down to global warming.
