Video shows Aussie journo's squalid jail conditions

Video smuggled from an Egyptian jail where Peter Greste has given a rare insight into the Australian journalist's future behind bars.

The secret vision leaked by inmates shows the overcrowded prison's decaying conditions, consisting of darkened cells, dirt floors and rusting pit toilets.

"They are suffering and it's like small rooms, no light, n ot enough oxygen ... it's very very bad conditions," Al Jazeera producer Montesar Marai told News Corp.

"All the Egyptian prisons I think are like this because I have seen man videos from different prisons ... they are all the same."

The Palestinian-born camera man, who is best known for his images of the Arab Spring in early 2011, now says he is fearful of returning to Egypt for risk of persecution.

"We have to be patient and to keep fighting, stand together and keep this issue alive all the time," he said.

"It's what we’ve done with our colleagues, who have been (jailed) in Guantanamo and Spain or wherever.”

Greste and his Al Jazeera co-accused Egyptian-Canadian bureau chief Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were this week sentenced to seven years imprisonment on charges of "aiding the Muslim Brotherhood and reporting false news."
