Woman 'tried to kill husband with fecal matter'

A US woman is accused of trying to kill her husband by injecting fecal matter into his IV line while he was recovering in hospital.

Police arrested Rose Mary Vogel, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after a nurse found the 65-year-old handling her husband's IV line, AP reports.

Tests on a brown substance found in the line identified it as fecal matter, which Vogel, a retired registered nurse, allegedly had used in an attempt to kill her hospitalised 66-year-old husband, although police do not know her motive.

A trace of brown substance was also found on the needle of an otherwise empty syringe found in Vogel's purse, police said.

Vogel's husband is expected to survive the heart procedure that first put him in hospital, as well as the alleged attempt on his life.
