Video of an American woman rushing to the aid of a cash-strapped mother buying nappies has gone viral, with people praising the stranger for her random act of kindness.

Carol Flynn had just finished shopping at the Sioux Falls, South Dakota Walmart on Monday when she overheard a cashier telling the young woman she could not price match more than one box of nappies.

Unable to afford all four boxes she had placed on the checkout, she would have to put some back.

A fellow shopper in line began filming just in time to catch Ms Flynn pull out her credit card to pay US$120 ($127.96) for the items.

The mother, Katie Kanefke, told KSFY "if you ever needed a sign that God's there for you in the hardships and the struggles, this is it."

The video, uploaded to Facebook by Jason Yoshino, has been liked more than 28,000 times and received more than 7000 shares.

"My wife and I were speechless at this warm hearted act of generosity," Mr Yoshino, a wedding entertainer, captioned the footage.

"There are some amazing people in this world."

But Ms Flynn dismissed the praise, saying it's just money after all.

"You can't take it with you," Flynn told the Argus Leader.

"I just think we should do things like that. That's kind of my thinking."
