The father of American "virgin killer" Elliot Rodger says he can't sleep with the knowledge of the pain his son caused.

In his first interview since the 22-year-old's May 23 killing spree, Hunger Games director Peter Rodger told ABC that he thought of his son's victims every night.

"Every night I go to sleep, I wake up and think of those young men and women who died, who were injured and terrorized," he said.

"And my son did that. My son caused so much pain and suffering for so many families."

Mr Rodger said he was living a "reverse nightmare" and the worst part was that he "didn't see this coming at all".

"I might have a nice dream, but now I wake up and slowly the truth of what happened dawns on me. My son was a mass murderer," he said.

According to his manifesto, the young murderer's lack of luck with women prompted him to kill six people and injured 13 during his bloody rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

After stabbing his two roommates and their friend, he fatally shot two female students outside his targeted sorority and then a bystander at a nearby deli.

He killed himself after being surrounded by responding police.
