US woman wakes up with British accent

Powered by

Getting a headache and going to bed to sleep it off is nothing out of the ordinary, but for an Arizona woman it took a bizarre turn when she woke up with a foreign accent.

Michelle Myers, a former Texas beauty queen who now lives in Arizona, US, has Foreign Accent Syndrome.

She’s gone from an American English accent to speaking with an Irish, Australian and even a British accent, local US media reports.
"They send in the psychiatrist at hospital and make sure you're not a loon," Myers told ABC News.

"Who would do this for attention? I don't know."

The syndrome is a rare condition that usually accompanies a stroke, neurological damage or underlying health issues.

Myers suggests her diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which caused her chronic pain from childhood into adulthood, could have triggered her accent change.

"I feel like a different person," Myers said.

"The person I am now has been through so much, compared to the person here."
