US university placed into lockdown after gunman spotted running through campus

A university in the US city of Indianapolis has been placed into lockdown after reports of a gunman on campus.

The Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) tweeted and posted to its website to urge students to seek shelter.

“If you are on campus, trust your instincts and take safe shelter in the nearest available room,” the university said in its alert to students.

“Lock the door if possible. Remain in place until the police or a campus administrator known to you gives the all clear.”

The university said it was believed the incident stemmed from an armed robbery nearby.
