"I've worked for the Game and Fish Commission for 20 years, and it's one of the stranger things that's happened," Keith Stephens, the Chief of Communications with the agency told local news station KY3.

The buck attacked Alexander when the hunter approached the animal to see if it was dead.

Alexander, who suffered multiple puncture wounds, managed to call family who alerted paramedics but later died in hospital.

"I don't know how long he left it there, but he went up to check it to make sure it was dead. And evidently it wasn't," Stephens added.

While it's not clear how long Alexander waited before checking on the deer, the agency reminded hunters to wait at least 30 minutes before approaching.
