Doctors are stumped by a 12-year-old US girl who began sneezing incessantly a month ago, up to 20 times a minute.

Texas girl Katelyn Thornley is now sneezing about 12,000 times a day with six doctors unable to determine what is causing it.

"It just started in little spurts. I just started sneezing. I thought it was like, oh I’m just allergic to something," she told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.

"I’m constantly in pain with my abdomen, my legs are hurting because I’ve been weak and I can barely eat."

Katelyn is now unable to attend school or play the clarinet, she says.

She only stops sneezing when she falls asleep, which she needs to take an antihistamine and listen to music to do.

Doctors have ruled out an allergic reaction and are considering the possibility Katelyn's sneezing is a tic deriving from a condition like Tourette's.
