US driver survives violent high speed crash

A driver in the US has survived a terrifying high speed crash that saw his car flip through the air up to five times.

The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon in DeLand, Florida, NBC Miami reports.

CCTV footage from a nearby business shows the vehicle already off the road and flipping as it enters the shot. 

With each violent revolution the car sprays parts and debris before coming to rest on its roof.

"It probably did four or five 360s in the air," a witness said.

Fortunately for the driver a number of bystanders witnessed the crash and rushed to his aid immediately.

The footage shows a group of men flip the car on its side and pull the injured man to safety.

One man uses a fire extinguisher to douse the flames as the improvised rescue operation plays out.

The driver was airlifted to hospital with head trauma.

The cause of the crash is not clear and is currently under investigation.
