A US police officer has kept his job after being secretly recorded saying he wanted to "f------ kill" a black man and make it look like self-defence.

British newspaper The Guardian today released the disturbing expletive-laden tirade by the Alabama officer.

33-year-old Troy Middlebrooks arrested black man Vincent Bias on drug charges in May 2013 but Bias was released on bail, sending Middlebrooks into a rage.

The recording was taken by Bias’ brother-in-law at the time of his arrest.

Middlebrooks rants: "And before the police got here, I'd f-----g put marks all over my s--- and make it look like he was trying to f-----g kill me. I God damn guarantee you."

He says Bias, who he refers to as "that n-----"… "needs a god damn bullet."

The officer's racially-loaded tirade cost the city $47,000 to settle with Bias, and avoid him taking the police department to court in a public lawsuit.

An outraged Bias said: "This town is ridiculous."

"The police here feel they can do what they want, and often they do."
