Tourist dies in NYC after punch 'by man he thought was his Uber driver'

A tourist visiting New York City has died after the driver of a car he thought could be his Uber allegedly punched him.

Sandor Szabo, 35, hit the ground in the Long Island City, Queens - and died two days later.

He was in town for a wedding, visiting from his home in Boca Raton, Florida.

It is thought he knocked on the window of the car to check if it was his lift, near a hotel at 1am on Sunday, according to the New York Daily News.

His brother said his phone battery had run out.

The driver got out and punched him in the face, and he fell, hitting his head on the concrete pavement.

He died in hospital in New York on Tuesday.

“When he was hit, he was struck so hard in the face," his brother Dominic Szabo told the Daily News.

“He probably just tapped on the wrong guy’s car,”

Police have released footage of a white SUV which drove off after the attack, and are hunting the driver.

Mr Szabo’s employer has paid tribute to him.

CEO Joel Gillon told the Sun Sentinel he was there for a trade show and then his step sister’s wedding.

He told PIX11 news Sandor was a “super outgoing, friendly and an incredibly smart businessman.”

“He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring,” he said in a statement.

“He was fun to be with, interesting and always interested.

“He was a really good person.

“We are devastated by this loss.”
