Toddler gets drunk after waitress serves sangria, not cranberry juice

A two-year-old girl in the US state of North Carolina has been rushed to hospital after a waitress at a roadhouse diner accidentally served her sangria instead of cranberry juice.

Gabriela Gilliam was with her parents at the Texas Roadhouse last Friday when the evening took an alarming turn.

The little girl took a large swig of the alcoholic cocktail and immediately said that it tasted funny.

Her mother, Tiffany Gilliam, tried a sip and realised why.

"She was staggering and she was kissing everything," the mother told TV news station WLOS.

Gabriela was rushed to hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with accidental alcohol ingestion.

She returned home, where Ms Tiffany Gilliam monitored her daughter for several nights as she slept.

"I had to rub her belly the whole night and she slept with us because I was scared that she might not wake up," she said.

The girl has now made a good recovery.

A Texas Roadhouse spokesman has since apologised for the incident and said it was an "honest" mistake.

He added that a restaurant staff member went with the family to the hospital.
