A strong thief carried out a remarkable crime when he singlehandedly lifted a safe weighing more than 110kg from a crowded Massachusetts restaurant.

Surveillance footage shows the man using an employee door to enter Stockholders Restaurant in Weymouth, about 10km south of Boston, on Sunday evening.

The man exited the restaurant after he was spotted by a manager, but re-entered a short time later and slipped downstairs to the office where the safe was located.

He then put a garbage bag over the safe and hefted it from the restaurant, managing to carry it up a flight of stairs and outside without assistance.

Restaurant owner Kevin Hynes, a former police officer, told WCVB News that he had "never seen anything like this" during his time on the force.

Hynes said the safe contained a "substantial" amount of cash, but wouldn't specify how much. He's offering a $2500 reward for information leading to the man's arrest.

The thief was using a mobile phone when he entered the restaurant, which prompted staff to speculate that he was receiving instructions about where the safe was located.

The restaurant has boosted its security since the robbery. All internal doors have had locks added, and the safe has been replaced with an even heavier model that is bolted to the floor.
