Newlyweds killed in helicopter crash leaving their wedding in Texas, USA

A couple were killed after the helicopter they left their wedding in crashed in the US.

Will and Bailee Ackerman Byler were killed, along with the chopper pilot, Gerald Douglas Lawrence, 76, when they crashed into a hillside.

The helicopter had taken off a few kilometres away from the family ranch in Uvalde, Texas, where the ceremony was held.

Friend Madi Wagner posted on Facebook the wedding was a “fairytale”.

“These two spent their last day on this earth celebrating with their most cherished loved ones- I believe it truly was the best day of their lives.”  

The couple were heading to a regional airport ahead of their honeymoon.

According to reports the helicopter was owned by Mr Byler’s father.

The couple were students at Sam Houston State University where they were studying agriculture.

University newspaper The Houstonian posted “It is with deepest sadness that we announce the tragic passing of two Bearkats Will Byler (Agriculture Engineering senior) and Bailee Ackerman Byler (Agricultural Communication senior) in a helicopter accident departing their wedding.

"We ask that you keep the Byler and Ackerman families in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police in Uvalde, 135km from San Antonio were alerted around midnight, with the wreckage found on Sunday morning.

Photos and videos posted on social media show the couple and their guests enjoying the wedding.

The National Transportation Safety Board will release details about the crash next week.
