Teen covered with a sheet after shooting but was still alive

A teenage shooting victim, whom Chicago paramedics covered with a sheet after they mistakenly believed he had been instantly killed, has died in hospital almost a day later.

Six people were shot at a party near the University of Illinois-Chicago campus early on Monday.

Erin Carey, 17, was shot in the head multiple times.

When paramedics arrived at the scene of the shooting, they believed Carey was dead and covered him with a sheet before treating the other victims.

Witnesses at the scene then noticed he was moving under the sheet and shouted that he was alive.

On police audio, an officer can be heard telling emergency services at the scene that Carey had begun to move “from side to side” under the sheet.

“He is responsive,” the officer said.

“He just moved…from side-to-side and his arms. So he is not dead.”

“We’ll have a unit go down and check on that male,” a dispatcher responded.

Paramedics then began administering CPR.

Police at the scene said Carey had suffered a “catastrophic injury”.

“He was shot in the head,” Anthony Riccio said.

“I do understand that paramedics looked at him, believed him to be deceased, covered him with that sheet and moved on to another individual who was nearby who was also shot.

“They saw motion, movement underneath the sheets.”

The 17-year-old was eventually taken to hospital and later died.

The paramedics response is now under investigation.

A 22-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and four others, aged between 21 to 25, were wounded.

Police say they believe the shooting was gang related. No arrests have been made.
