Teenage girl falls eight metres from amusement park ride in New York

Witnesses have scrambled to catch a teenage girl who tumbled from a theme park ride in upstate New York.  

Video shared by broadcaster CBS showed the 14-year-old holding onto the edge of the gondola on the stopped Sky Ride at Six Flags Amusement Park on yesterday.

As she dangled from the ride, a shocked crowd of witnesses gathered below to catch her.

“They’ll catch her … go ahead,” one person yelled as the girl released her grip and fell eight metres into the safety of the crowd.

She was taken to Albany Medical Centre in a stable condition with no serious injuries, The Warren County Sheriff’s office said.

The ride was stopped by an operator after word was received that there was a rider in distress, officials said.

Officials inspected the ride and said it was in proper working order. The park said in a statement that the safety of guests was a “top priority”.

"There does not appear to be any malfunction of the ride, but we have closed the attraction until a thorough review can be completed," a park official said.

An unidentified 47-year-old man was treated and released from a hospital for a back injury sustained when he attempted to catch the falling girl.
