A US high school is considering how it will discipline a student who took a selfie with a dead body on a field trip and shared it over Instagram.

The Alabama teen, who is not named, was on an excursion to the local university's biology department when she uploaded the picture of herself with the corpse.

With a beaming smile across her face, the Clements High School student posed in front of the cadaver, which had been donated for the purposes of medical research.

In the background, another person is pictured peeling back a sheet covering the body.

The student deleted the post but not before an anonymous classmate took a screenshot and handed it over to teachers.

Mobile phones were banned during the tour, which takes students through the University of Alabama's anatomical donor programme.

Limestone County School Board public relations director Karen Tucker said the incident was being investigated.

"We are speaking to the University of Alabama Birmingham, they are understandably upset with this incident and we want to preserve our relationship with the university," she said.

"Therefore we are speaking to them and wanting to know how we can mend this process and keep our relationship with them, and we are in the process of deciding on the discipline that will occur."

The school principal declined to comment on the investigation.
