Teen 'driving like an idiot' busted by own video

A US teenager accused of causing multiple car accidents gave police all the evidence they needed to arrest him when he uploaded footage of his high-speed joyride to YouTube.

Robert Kelley, 18, allegedly recorded a five-minute video he titled "Me Driving Like An Idiot", which depicts an unseen driver swerving in and out of traffic on a Florida highway, running a red light, driving on the road shoulder and crashing into the back of another car.

Kelley eventually crashed in a ditch and had to be extricated from his vehicle by firefighters and airlifted to hospital, reports the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Police say he uploaded the video of his reckless driving from his hospital bed a day after the crash on Monday, April 28.

New Smyrna Beach Police Chief George Markert said cops "certainly appreciate" Kelley providing them with the evidence.

"If the video is an accurate account of that particular day of his driving, it's just a total disregard for the safety and well-being of the citizens on the highways and side streets that day,” Sgt. Eugene Griffith told ABC News.

The video, which came to police attention via a tip-off from the public, has since been removed from YouTube.

Police say Kelley actually caused two crashes: in the first incident he allegedly struck a car, injuring one of the passengers, then fled the scene.

In the second crash, which put him in hospital, Kelley is accused of hitting three more vehicles stopped at a red light.

"We're just really lucky we're not dealing with a death in this case," Griffith told WESH News.

Kelley, who does not have a driver's license, was arrested on May 2, according to WFTV News. Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in his driving.
