A small plane has crashed into New York’s Hudson River.

The vintage World War Two Republic P-47 Thunderbolt plunged into the water about 3km south of the George Washington Bridge, The New York Times reported.

A witness told the newspaper he saw the plane flying low, then it “disappeared” about 7.30pm local time.

It is unclear if anyone on board was injured.

The aircraft was due to take part in an air show this weekend.

Emergency services remain at the scene.

In 2009, the pilot of an Airbus A320 famously made an emergency water landing on the Hudson River. All 155 passengers and crew survived.
