San Bernardino shooting: Workmates thought it was a drill, laughed as police stormed centre

Nurse Dorothy Wong thought it was just a drill when she saw armed police swarm around her building at San Bernardino’s Inland Regional Center.

Nevertheless she walked up to the window and started filming the spectacle, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Drill started,” she texted her husband.

The calm and curious voices of her colleagues can be heard in the background of the video.

“They’re all geared up!” someone says, “Rifles and everything!”

Someone laughs, while another remarks, “Oh that is scary”.

The workers are clearly oblivious to the reality of the horror unfolding, in which up to three shooters are believed to have opened fire on a Christmas Party in a conference room within the complex, killing fourteen and injuring at least 14 more.

Ms Vong’s husband, Mark Vong, told the Los Angeles Times said he got a text message a few minutes later as his wife was told of the news.

“Well it’s real,” she wrote.

“We’re in a locked office,” she added in a second message.

The centre where the shooting occurred serves people with developmental disabilities.

Active shooter drills are reportedly held once a month because of the unstable nature of some of the centre’s clients.
