Rebel Wilson urges US to learn from Australian gun laws after Lafayette shooting

Australian actress Rebel Wilson has spoken out about American gun laws in the wake of the Louisiana cinema shooting.

The Pitch Perfect 2 actress took to Twitter to urge America to follow in Australia’s footsteps in regards to gun laws.

Australian gun laws were overhauled after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 where 35 people were murdered by 28-year-old shooter Martin Bryant.

The massacre remains the second-deadliest shooting by a lone gunman in history.

After the shooting, then-Prime Minister John Howard pushed through the National Firearms Program Implementation Act which strictly regulated private ownership of guns.

President Obama has lauded Australia’s gun laws in the past.

During a guest appearance on Marc Maron’s popular podcast WTF, President Obama, voiced his regret that shootings in the US have become so commonplace.

“The truth of the matter is that this doesn’t happen with this kind of frequency in other countries,” he said.

“When Australia had a mass killing, I think in Tasmania about 25 years ago it was just so shocking to the system that the whole country said, ‘we’re going to completely change our gun laws’. And they did, and it hasn’t happened since.”

Two people died in the shooting at a Louisiana cinema on Thursday.

The shooter is understood to have bought the gun legally.
