Police responding to reports of screaming from a US home didn't encounter a domestic violence victim like they expected – instead they found a loved-up pig.

A neighbour called police last week after hearing what she believed to be domestic violence at a nearby home in Maine, the Morning Sentinel reports.

"The caller reported she heard screaming," Maine State Police said.

Four police officers went to the house expecting to handle a domestic violence incident but were surprised when the owner revealed the source of screaming.

"The homeowner stated her male pig was screaming because he was in a pen with five other female pigs in heat," police said.

Police confirmed there was no assault of disturbance at the home "other than the screaming male pig".
