Police in riot gear have used rubber bullets to control hundreds of unruly fans of murdered rapper XXXTentacion.

The large group gathered for an impromptu memorial for the 20-year-old in Los Angeles, laying candles and flowers in the shape of an X.

But the vigil quickly descended into chaos.

Roads were blocked, as the crowd began jumping on moving cars and swarming news vans.

Heavily armed police moved in, firing rubber bullets into the crowd.

The mass gathering did disperse, with police following at a distance.

No arrests were made, while one person was treated for minor injuries.

XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jasheh Dwayne Onfroy, was shot dead in his car near Miami, while leaving a motor sports dealership on Monday.

His killers fled in a black SUV, and are still on the run.

At the time of his death, he was facing charges after allegedly bashing his pregnant girlfriend.
