Armed suspect in custody after Orlando International Airport locked down

An armed suspect is in custody following a stand-off with police at Orlando International Airport in the US.

The airport was locked down today following reports of a rogue gunman, who police earlier confirmed was speaking with a crisis negotiator.

Police later updated their Twitter account, confirming the suspect had been arrested. 

"Everyone is safe," the tweet read.

Images showed a heavy police presence at the airport, with officials hurrying travellers out of an area inside the airport.

The Florida Highway Patrol closed all roads to the airport, with "zero exceptions". 

Authorities warned people to stay in their vehicles and away from law enforcement.

A spokeswoman for the Orlando International Airport earlier said authorities were responding to a report of an armed man in the rental car area.

Earlier this year, authorities say an Alaskan man killed five people inside a baggage claim area at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
