A young girl who was missing for more than two-and a half years has been found alive underneath a staircase in a New York home.

Paislee Shultis was found in a makeshift room hiding under a staircase with her alleged abductor after police spent an hour searching a home in Saugerties, Ulster County for her yesterday.

She was four-years-old when she reported missing from Cayuga Heights in July 2019 - more than 250 kilometres from where she was found.

Police believed she was taken by her "non-custodial parents", according to US media.

Officers searched the Saugerties home yesterday after they received a tip about her whereabouts.

During the search, Detective Erik Thiele noted something appeared odd about the staircase and saw a blanket after flashing a light between the steps, NBC News has reported.

"Detectives used a ... tool to remove several of the wooden steps, and that is when detectives saw a pair of tiny feet," police said in a statement.

"After removing several more steps, the child and her abductor were discovered within. The space was small, cold, and wet."
