Married Congressman caught on camera kissing aide

A married US congressman who promoted his Christian and family values during his campaign to get elected has been caught on video kissing a female member of his staff.

Republican Vance McAllister, who represents Louisiana's Fifth District, has apologised to God, his family and constituents after video of the embrace surfaced on the website of local newspaper The Ouachita Citizen.

"There's no doubt I've fallen short and I'm asking for forgiveness," McAllister said in a statement.

"I'm asking for forgiveness from God, my wife, my kids, my staff and my constituents who elected me to serve."

An anonymous source provided the newspaper with the footage, which shows McAllister, 40, passionately kissing his 33-year-old congressional aide Melissa Anne Peacock inside his office two days before Christmas last year.

Throughout last year's election campaign McAllister pushed his Christian faith, starred in television commercials featuring him walking hand-in-hand with his wife of 16 years and even asked voters to pray for him.

His campaign was also boosted by support from the family featured in the hit reality television show Duck Dynasty, with the show's stars endorsing him on YouTube.

McAllister will stand for re-election next November if he seeks a full term in the House of Congress.
