If you're going to steal a chainsaw it's probably best not to hide it down your pants.

Alas, this gem of advice was missed on one thief who decided to try his luck by shoving the deadly tool down his trackie-dacks.

CCTV cameras caught the achingly stupid act which occurred October 30 in the Treasure Coast Lawn Equipment store in Port St Lucie , Florida.

In the video homeless man Anthony Ballard, 28, is seen standing just out of sight of the attendant behind checkout counter and carrying the bright-orange tool.

Ballard allegedly entered the store and asked a worker for change of a dollar before taking the opportunity to trouser the tool.

He haphazardly stretches out the waist on his trackpants and slips the blade of the bulky power tool down his dacks and pulls his T-shirt over the top of the motor.

Police said Ballard managed to exit the store and took off on his bicycle with the chainsaw still stashed in his pants.

An employee pursued the alleged thief who saw him dump the pocketed power tool in a vacant lot.

The employee restrained Ballard until police arrived and later charged him with grand theft.
