US news reporter Roger Lohse was wrapping up his live report on fires in southwest Miami woodlands, when the cameraman noticed something more interesting happening in the background.

Motioning to Lohse that he should turn around, the cameraman zoomed in to reveal a firefighter wrapping a white towel around a black kitten.

Rescuers had heard meowing sounds coming from the woods where the fire was burning and found the kitten hidden in a cardboard beer box just metres away.

"Not only did they put out a fire, but we just had a rescue here," Lohse told WPLG viewers.

In a subsequent tweet, Lohse noted that authorities suspected the kitten was tossed into the woods already inside the box.

In the time it took the fire front to be contained, the kitten appeared to have effortlessly stolen its rescuer’s heart.

"We're going to put him back in the box, we're going to go in the truck and home with me," the firefighter said.

After making sure the kitten was snug, she did just that - running up a hill to the fire truck, with the kitten in tow.

There have been no updates on the kitten's condition.
