A US game show contestant who angered viewers with his unusual but successful tactics has hit back at those who claim he is a cheat.

When Jeopardy contestant Arthur Chu first appeared on the show last week he stumped his opponents by starting to answer the high stakes questions instead of the easier ones.

"Like any game, strategy plays a big role," Mr Chu told Fox News.

His strategy of jumping across the board in search of the Daily Doubles, which award extra points, landed the contestant in hot water on Twitter with many users saying the approach was unfair.

But Mr Chu has hit back saying he is undeterred and that his game plan is legal.

"Between $10,000 and getting haters on Twitter, the $10,000 is more important to me," he said.

Mr Chu's tactics put off his competitors and limit their chances of catching him as he accumulates big points early in the game.

Despite the controversy his methods are proving to be successful – over four nights he has won more than A$111,000.
