Former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife catch the train home after Trump's inauguration

It’s not quite riding off into the sunset – but Joe Biden and his wife Jill departed this morning’s inauguration with trademark charm after handing over the vice presidential reins to Mike Pence.

While Barack and Michelle Obama left the event in the presidential aircraft, bound for Palm Springs, the Bidens boarded an Amtrak train home to Delaware.

A photo of the pair boarding the train was shared on the former vice president’s Twitter account, earning praise from his admirers.

As he waved to the cameras at the train station, Mr Biden said he was “Back on Amtrak”.

Mr Biden regularly catches the train to Washington. In a recent interview with CNN, he said it had been calculated that he had made 8,200 round trips on Amtrak trains.

“Two hundred and fifty nine miles round trip a day, not every day, but on average 217 days a year,” he said.
