Man seriously injured after explosion in New York City’s Central Park
A man is facing having his leg amputated after stepping on explosives in New York City’s Central Park, which has shut down a large part of the park.
CBS News reported a man was climbing on rocks and stepped on something that blew up just before 11am local time (1am AEST).
It is understood the man's injuries are severe and he may have to have his leg amputated.
The man, who is understood to be 18 and from Washington DC, was believed to have been with his friends at the time of the explosion.
One of the men from the group told WCBS 880 "I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what happened".
The bomb squad was called to the scene and shut down part of Central Park while it investigated.
The site is on the corner of 5th Avenue and 68th Streets, near the Central Park Zoo.
It is not yet clear what caused the blast but there are reports it may have been fireworks.
Sunday marks the 4th of July holiday in the US.
