Plane's exit chute bursts open in mid-air

It’s a terrifying moment when an emergency chute is inflated during your flight, and passengers on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Los Angeles can testify it’s no less horrifying when it occurs by accident.

A large emergency exit slide, used for escaping the plane during a crash landing, burst open mid-air at the back of the plane during the domestic flight on Sunday night.

Some of the 101 passengers on board the flight managed to capture the incident on their phones.

The pilot made the executive decision to make an emergency landing in Kansas.

Taylor Martinez, one of the passengers on board, took to Twitter to say it was the “scariest flight of all time."

Another passenger told KWCH12: “You just heard a big bang and a hiss and (the cabin crew) just had a panicked look.”

No one was hurt during the flight, and passengers praised the crew for maintaining the calm throughout plane.

Those on board were put up in a hotel in Kansas overnight before being put on a connecting flight to California.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the incident, it was initially reported someone aboard the aircraft tried to open an emergency door.
