Ebola turns patient's blue eye green months after he was 'cured'

Doctors have found Ebola in the eyeball of a US man months after the patient was told he was cured.

Dr. Ian Crozier was released from Emory University Hospital in October last year after a long battle with the disease which almost ended his life.

However, two months later he returned and complained about decreasing sight and intense pain and pressure in his left eye.

Not only was his eye undergoing considerable discomfort – it had turned green.

Before the disease struck, the doctor had two blue eyes.

Tests revealed the infected eye was “teeming” with Ebola.

“The eye felt dead to me,” he told The New York Times.

“It was like an assault. It was so personal.”

The doctor had contracted the often fatal virus when he was working as a volunteer for the World Health Organisation in Sierra Leone.

He was eventually released after doctors declared he was mostly free of the virus – however the disease can persist for months in semen.

Despite the eye infection, the assessing team declared he posed no risk to those who came into casual contact with him.
