If there weren't any photos we wouldn't believe this story at all.

An unconscious drunk man reportedly managed to stay in place on the boot of a stranger's car while it travelled at speeds of up to 100km/h.

US man Carl Webb had to be pulled over by police because he was totally unaware of a man in a Hawaiian shirt sleeping on the back of his car last Thursday.

"The officer came up and he said, 'Mister, are you aware there's a body on your trunk?'" Webb recounted to Fox13.

"So I got out. We walked around and sure enough there he was still hanging on, still unconscious, just lying there.

"There's no way to describe it. It's unbelievable."

What makes the story especially hard to fathom is the fact the boot was just 35cm wide.

Webb had the sunshade on his rear-window so neither he or his wife noticed the unconscious man.

When police woke the man, he was so drunk he started to wander into traffic.

He was arrested, but it is not known if he was charged.

Webb and his wife had been returning from a barbecue festival in downtown Memphis at the time.
