Drug-carrying man didn't know cocaine was illegal

A US man caught trying to hide a bag of cocaine in a pot plant allegedly told police he did not know the drug was illegal.

Guy Lanchester, 46, was caught with the narcotic after police were called to the Pier House Resort in Florida on Sunday to deal with a separate matter.

An officer then spotted Lanchester fumbling with a small plastic bag behind a flower pot, NBC reports.

When the officer asked him what he was doing, he "quickly shoved his hands into the flower pot and yanked them back out", according to the police report.

Police located the "baggie containing a white powdery substance" and it tested positive for cocaine.

"I don't understand… I thought cocaine wasn't illegal in Florida," Lanchester told police.

He has been charged with cocaine possession and evidence tampering.
