Dogs recovering following rescue from ‘melting’ rooftop

Two dogs have been rescued after they were found covered with “bubbling, boiling tar” atop a New Jersey residence.

The Yorkshire terrier and pit bull were spotted late last Friday afternoon atop the Newark residence by a member of the public who notified police, ABC News US reports.

Associated Humane Societies (AHS) was called to assist and reported finding the dogs “frantically ‘dancing’ on the roof in an attempt to stop their feet from burning”.

AHS believes the roof – made of tar – had melted due to high temperatures, resulting in the dogs receiving burns to the pads of their feet and getting hot tar tangled in their hair.

They are believed to have been left out on the roof without shade or water for a long period.

Both have since received medical treatment. The Yorkie remains in the care of AHS and is expected to be eventually offered for adoption.

A veterinary technician responsible for caring for the injured pups is expected to foster the pit bull then formally adopt him following his recovery.

The AHS and local police are still attempting to identify the dog’s owners.
