A stretch of highway in the US became a buzzing scene of chaos after a truck carrying "millions" of honey bees crashed and overturned.

The accident occurred along Oklahoma's southbound I-35 on Monday afternoon (local time), News Channel 4 reports.

A deputy sheriff attending the scene ended up being trapped inside his patrol cruiser when bees swarmed his unit like some sort of B-grade horror flick.

Deputy Carl Zink, who said he received one sting during the encounter, was forced to wait until the bees cleared off so he could drive away safely.

Another man, who hauled the truck driver to safety from his upturned cab, said he saw "millions of bees".

"I couldn't give you a number, but millions," Scott Woods said.

"I got stung on the lip, on the end of the nose, mouth, the side of the eye and then the back."

Locals in the surrounding area said they were spotting bees about almost a kilometre away from the accident site.

Bee keepers were reported as saving several hundred thousand bees.

The driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
