CCTV shows man fall through open cellar doors

An unlucky pedestrian in New York is in a serious condition after falling though open cellar doors and into a basement.

CCTV footage shows the man tumble over the open door and down the stars as he walks down the footpath of 119th Street in East Harlem on Monday evening, CBS 2 reports.

A person walking behind the victim rang 911 and the man was taken to Harlem Hospital Centre with a head injury.

According to witnesses, people who saw the man heading towards the doors tried to warn him, but to no avail.

"He didn't see what was going down – he just went straight down, head first," witness Jerry Whatts said.

A man sitting next to the doors told CBS 2 he was unable to get up and help the man due to health reasons.

The Department of Buildings is investigating the incident.
