Boy writes message to sick mum in snow

It's the message that brought a smile to hundreds of sick patients stuck inside a US hospital.

William Hunt, 14, knew his sick mother needed some cheering up after being diagnosed with blood cancer a week ago.

Sharon Hart, 48, was holed up on the 14^th floor of Chicago Hospital when one night, William phoned her and told her to look outside.

"He said come to the window, he was so excited," Mrs Hart told WGN.

When she opened the curtains, Mrs Hart couldn't believe what she saw: a message written in the snow just for her.

"It said 'Hi mum' with a smiley face and all," Mrs Hart said.

The idea came to William after he and his father Gary visited the hospital's roof to see Chicago's skyline.

"I just kind of thought, 'You know, it would be great to have my mum see this message," Williams told ABC Local.

So, in the snow, William delicately wrote: "Hi Mom", with a smiley face in the middle.

From there William's dad joined in, encouraging his son to add the words 'God Bless You' to the message.

It was a small but poignant addition that touched the hearts of the family members of other patients in the hospital.

"One of the other family members here said they had goose bumps and that night went to bed crying about how special that was," hospital nurse Maura Hoyt said.
