Bouncing tyre comes off vehicle and slams into car

A US driver's heart missed a beat when a tyre came out of nowhere and slammed into his car as he drove on a highway.

The frightening incident occurred on the I94 East in Indiana on Sunday and was captured on the vehicle's dashcam.

Footage captures the driver chatting with a passenger when the bouncing tyre suddenly appears in the distance.

The airborne wheel narrowly misses another car before it speeds directly towards the pair.

With no time to react the driver screams before the front of his car is smashed and the airbags deploy.

"God damn it," the driver repeats as he pulls over with the car's horn honking incessantly.

Despite the severe damage the accident could have been much worse had the tyre bounced only slightly higher and crashed through the car's windscreen.

In a description of the video posted online, Kevin J said the rogue tyre "came across the highway median from a westbound car who lost his front driver side tire (sic)."  

"Only injury was cuts and scratches on the driver's hands from the airbag deployment."

He said the "most annoying part" of the accident was that no one stopped to check if he was okay or needed help even though many cars passed by on the busy highway.
