Fan in critical condition after hit by flying baseball bat at Boston's Fenway Park

A woman injured when a piece of a broken baseball bat flew into the stands at Boston's Fenway Park on Friday is in a serious condition in hospital.

Tonya Carpenter was admitted to hospital with "life-threatening" injuries according to the Boston Police Department.

She had been sitting with her husband and young son at the game between the Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics and was struck in the head in the second inning when A's batter Brett Lawrie shattered his bat and a large chunk flew into the second row of the stands between home plate and the dugout

"Tonya Carpenter was admitted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center last night following injury at Fenway Park," a statement released through the hospital said.

"She is in serious condition. Tonya's family and loved ones are grateful to all who have reached out with thoughts and prayers but are requesting privacy at this time as Tonya recovers."

The Red Sox issued a statement on Saturday saying the club "offer our prayers and our thoughts as we wish her a speedy recovery."
