Bernie Sanders will win the US presidential Democratic primary in Indiana in a come-from-behind victory, according to projections from NBC and CNN.

The win is a significant one for Mr Sanders, who managed to hold off party frontrunner and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

Mr Sanders, a self-declared democratic socialist, was ahead of Ms Clinton by 53.2 percent to 46.8 percent with about three quarters of precincts reporting, although Clinton remained well ahead in the delegate battle for the nomination.

"The political revolution wins in Indiana! Thank you," Mr Sanders has tweeted.

"For the past few weeks, the corporate media has counted us out of this election," the text on an image tweeted alongside the declaration read.

"The political and financial establishment of this country have been vocal in their desire to go away. To get in line. Today, Indiana voters had another idea."

Meanwhile, Ms Clinton has appealed to votes to donate to her campaign in the wake of Republican candidate Donald Trump becoming the presumptive GOP nominee, following his rival Ted Cruz's decision to suspend his campaign.
