Multiple causalities have been reported at a neo-Nazi rally in California, after violence broke out between the party and a rival protest group.

At least seven people have been hospitalised after a stabbing spree broke out outside the California State Capitol where 150 anarchists and "anti-fascist" arrived to counterprotest the pre-approved rally, which had been organised by the neo-Nazi sympathiser group Traditionalist Workers Party, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Some 25 neo-Nazis were reportedly present for the rally.

The Sacramento Fire Department have declared the incident a “mass casualty event”, confirming on Twitter that five people suffered from stab wounds and were taken to hospital, “some with critical trauma”.

Officer Matt McPhail of the Sacramento Police Department said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.
