US woman punched by cops on beach charged with assault

The American woman whose violent arrest at a New Jersey beach was captured on video has been indicted on charges of aggravated assault of a police officer.
 
Emily Weinman, of Philadelphia, also faces charges of resisting arrest, throwing bodily fluids and obstruction in the indictment handed up last week by a grand jury.
 
The confrontation began on the US Memorial Day public holiday in May when Weinman repeatedly refused to give officers her name when they questioned her about alcoholic beverages on the beach.

A video shot by a nearby beachgoer showed an officer punching her twice in the head as she lies on the sand, her legs flailing.

Voices are heard yelling “stop resisting,” though it’s unclear who was talking.

The footage went viral and caused widespread debate in the US and globally over excessive police force during the incident.

But the officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing after authorities reviewed that video and police body-cam footage.
 
Weinman rejected a plea bargain offer in July and instead sought the charges to be dismissed.
