US Vice-President elect Mike Pence booed at ‘Hamilton’ performance

US Vice-President elect Mike Pence has been booed while taking his seat at a performance of the Broadway musical, Hamilton, in New York City.

Mr Pence was met with a frosty reception as he arrived at the Richard Rodgers Theatre last night to enjoy the smash hit hip-hop musical.

Video captured by an audience member shows Mr Pence receiving loud jeers and a few claps, as he makes his way down the aisle. .

Many were quick to take to social media to point out the "irony" of the Republican's attendance, as Hamilton deals largely with the concerns of the gay community and people of colour.

Mr Pence has openly spoken against gay rights.

After the performance, Hamilton cast member Brandon Dixon made a statement to Mr Pence on behalf of the show.

“We welcome you and truly thank-you for joining us,” Mr Dixon said.

“We are of the diverse America who are concerned and anxious your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children and our planet.

“We truly hope our show has inspired you to up-hold our American values and to work on behalf of ALL of us,” he said.

Mr Dixon's comments received a standing ovation and loud cheers of support.

Mr Pence is set to be sworn in along with President-elect Donald Trump on January 20 next year.
