A "very brave" four-year-old girl was shopping for toys when she was shot in New York's Times Square as an argument between a group of men turned violent.

The child is among three innocent bystanders to have been injured in the shooting on Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning AEST).

She is expected to undergo surgery for her injuries after being shot in the leg.

NYPD officers are hunting for a gunman after three bystanders, including a four-year-old girl, were injured in a shooting at New York's Times Square. CNN

Investigators currently believe there was only one gunman who fired the shots. CNN

It's understood that shots were fired after an argument erupted between a group of four men, when one pulled out a gun.

NYPD officers have launched a manhunt to track down "at least one" shooter.

"The perpetrators of this senseless violence are being tracked down and the NYPD will bring them to justice," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.

A 24-year-old woman was hit in her thigh and a 44-year-old woman was shot in the foot, police told local media.

None of the victims' injuries are believed to be life-threatening, with all three in a stable condition in hospital.
