Motorcyclist plunges off cliff

A motorcyclist has crawled out of a ravine with broken bones and serious internal injuries after plunging 75m down a cliff.

Matthew Murray said he thought he was going to die as his bike's steering jarred and sent him flying off a highway in the Santa Monica Mountains on July 27.

The 27-year-old lay unconscious for over a minute but screamed out for help the second he woke up, riddled with broken bones and two punctured lungs.

Knowing there was no one coming to his rescue and unable to reach his phone, Mr Murray knew he had to make his way out of the ravine alone if he was to survive.

"They just said people have to fight or flight, or whatever it is, and I just decided to fight," Mr Murray told CBS on Friday.

The motorcycling enthusiast said his legs were "done" so he had to use only his arms to drag himself up.

Mr Murray – who has ridden motorcycles for six years - said he went into shock about half way up but managed to push through and made it to the highway.

"Once I made it to the top I just collapsed," he said.

A passing motorist called an ambulance and Mr Murray was rushed to hospital, where he faces a long recovery process.

He was wearing a GoPro on his helmet which has allowed him to relive the terrifying fall from his hospital bed.

Mr Murray said he will never ride again.
