A deserted ‘ghost’ town which could be straight out of a Stephen King novel is back on the market in South Dakota.

The haunting township of Swett is up for sale for US$250,000 – or AU$345,000.

The sale offer includes a bar, house and shop, and photos show a bullet-riddled ‘Swett’ sign marking the town’s boundary.

Photos show the large bar fitted out with retro furniture, and rundown cabins on the property.

“Locals believe the residence to be haunted,” real estate agent Stacie Montgomery said in a Facebook advertisement.

Swett has become “world famous” for its small size of 6.16 acres and the supernatural rumours that surround it, Ms Montgomery said.

The town was declared large enough for a post office in 1932, but the move was reversed in 1945 and the town then became known for its tavern, she said.

Buyers could run the tavern or start a camping or other holiday business, Ms Montgomery suggested.
