US cop films sparks flying between waves and power lines

A US policeman cruising through a beachside town as a storm raged found himself face to face with an electrifying scene – literally.

Police Sgt Allen Wilson was patrolling for storm damage in Wells, Maine, on Tuesday night when he came across waves nearly four metres high crashing into transformers, WGME reports.

The collision caused a series of sparks to light up the night sky, which was captured on Sgt Wilson's police cruiser dashcam.

"The light from the transformers sparking is quite stunning, " Wells Police said on Facebook.

"If you are in the area, please be safe and stay indoors!!!"

No one was injured in the storm, but WGME reports Wells residents have "a mess on their hands" as a result of debris and minor flooding.
